Extraordinary Insects
Recently we welcomed honey bees to the Farm and it’s got me thinking a lot about earth’s tiniest heroes…bugs.
Particularly, pollinators: bees, butterflies, moths—and even flies and beetles! Pollinators are crucial for food production and a healthy ecosystem.
I picked up a copy of Extraordinary Insects a few years ago and have been meaning to read it. I think now it’s officially time to cross it off my TBR. Join me and we can bookclub it in a future newsletter!
A Study Abroad Reunion
A few summers ago, I boarded a plane to Venice with a group of strangers. Two of which I’d become lifelong friends with. Over the years, but especially during our Italian summer, we’ve shared so many beautiful moments together.
They’re the kind of girls that I don’t see or speak to every day but when we get together it’s like no time has passed. We’re back in Italy chatting and laughing over pizza.
This week I hosted the girls for a reunion dinner. Before they arrived I prepped pizza dough, homemade marinara, and a rocket (arugula) salad. When the girls arrived we made our pizzas while listening to our favorite Italian songs—one of which our professoressa made us perform at karaoke as an assignment (she’s the coolest).
We dined outdoors and finished the night with a golf cart ride around the farm and pistachio gelato.
Sewing! Sewing! Sewing!
Speaking of pollinators, I mentioned a few newsletters ago that I had some fabric I was really excited about.
The fabrics I look at all day in the shop are positively scrumptious. Oh gosh, just thinking about it now brings me joy. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with a line called “Bee Garden” by Moda Fabrics. It’s beautiful and every time I would pass it by, I would try and come up with a good excuse to take it home with me. I eventually did find a good excuse that I’ll tell you about in a future Just Because issue! (Here’s a hint: 🐝 🦋🍰🪲)
I knew I wanted to do an issue on bugs and this quilt would be the perfect addition to my newsletter! So, I bought the quilt kit.
Oops.
In a perfect world, I would have my completed quilt ready to show you buuutttt I got a little sidetracked with a few other projects…
I blame the fabric shop, really. How does my boss expect me to look at the CUTEST Halloween fabric and not take it home with me?
Yes, I know. I have a problem.
Part of the problem is I love Halloween. A lot. (Specifically, happy feel-good Halloween. I don’t like scary things). So, I also bought Riley Blake’s Trick or Treat fat quarter set and immediately got to chopping.
And, well, that turned into going through my fabric stash and unearthing even more cute Halloween fabric. Not to mention the Fall fabric my Grandma fell in love with and purchased so I could make her a quilt…
My bee quilt is doomed.
Okay, not really. It’s just a little further down on the taxi line.
That’s all for this week. I’m off to do some more quilting and watch Gilmore Girls for the hundredth time. Talk to you next week!
Xoxo,
Hav
Your quilts are beautiful!
